Top Gear comes to an end after 46 years following Andrew Flintoff’s serious crash

BBC has announced that British motoring television programme Top Gear will not be returning to TV “for the foreseeable future” following the 2022 crash involving the host and former English cricketer Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff. The show was first aired on BBC on April 22, 1977, presented by Angela Rippon and Tom Coyne at the time.
From 1977, it aired until 2001.Top Gear then returned in 2002 as a programme that focused on the examination and reviewing of motor vehicles, primarily cars, but it was expanded upon after the broadcast of its earlier series to incorporate films featuring motoring-based challenges, special races, timed laps of notable cars, and celebrity timed laps on a course specially-designed for the relaunched programme.

The show is most notably known for its presenter Jeremy Clarkson, who was with Top Gear from 1988 to 1999, and then later from 2002 till 2015. Meanwhile Andrew Flintoff became a presenter of the BBC One car show Top Gear in 2019, remaining with the programme until he was involved in an accident during filming in late 2022. Production of the show was cancelled immediately.
Flintoff was airlifted to hospital after accident. In October 2023, press reports confirmed that BBC Studios had reached a £9 million financial settlement to compensate Flintoff for the injuries he sustained. “Given the exceptional circumstances, the BBC has decided to rest the UK show for the foreseeable future. The BBC remains committed to Freddie, Chris and Paddy who have been at the heart of the show’s renaissance since 2019, and we’re excited about new projects being developed with each of them. We will have more to say in the near future on this. We know resting the show will be disappointing news for fans, but it is the right thing to do,” said a statement released by BBC.
