Tourism Jasper Embracing the Potential of AI: Expanding Boundaries

An Alberta tourism agency is currently studying the potential benefits of using artificial intelligence (AI) to optimize operations and enhance the visitor experience. The agency is exploring different applications of AI in areas such as travel patterns, weather analysis, accommodation occupancy, seasonal hiring, human-wildlife conflict, and adapting to climate change. Tourism Jasper has partnered with the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (AMII) to incorporate AI into their festival programming for the Dark Sky Festival. The use of AI includes programming the drone light show using machine learning and exploring space-related topics. AMII will also feature guest speakers at the 2023 festival. The partnership aims to leverage AMII’s expertise in research and data intelligence to make data-driven decisions and improve marketing strategies. Through predictive analytics and machine learning, Tourism Jasper hopes to gain insights into vehicle dispersion, human-wildlife conflict, climate change, and sustainability within the destination in real-time. AMII considers AI as an additional tool for organizations that already rely on data analysis, and the application of AI can help solve challenges related to travel optimization, finding new experiences for visitors, improving seasonal hiring and tour operator efficiency. To address concerns about AI, AMII has established policies and procedures, including an algorithmic risk assessment and data sheets that outline the intent and regulatory aspects of the data used.
