Tragic Fire Engulfs Special One Racing’s Lancia Delta Evo eRX Rally Cars

An unfortunate and terrifying incident took place earlier today at Lydden Hill in the UK, impacting the world of rallycross, especially Special One Racing. Thankfully, there have been no reports of injuries resulting from the fire. However, the team’s Delta Evo-e RX electric rally cars were completely destroyed, along with many other valuable items.
Currently, there is very limited information available regarding the fire. A video shared on Instagram by _rallycross_ displays the Special One Racing trailer and cars, fully engulfed in flames in the paddock area. The distinct Lancia Delta-shaped car shells can be seen amidst the smoke and flames. The Instagram post also mentions that the team lost all of its apparel in the fire.
It remains uncertain whether this weekend’s race at Lydden Hill will be delayed or canceled. The FIA and the World Rallycross Championship have released a statement regarding the incident, stating that a fire occurred in the Special One Racing team area at Lydden Hill this morning. Fire crews are present on-site, and the venue is currently not open to the public. No injuries have been reported, and further updates will be provided as the situation is assessed and monitored.
The Delta Evo-e RX made its debut in the 2021 World Rallycross Championship. These cars, built by GCK Motorsport, closely resemble the classic Delta Integrale but feature a new chassis design incorporating two electric motors. During its launch, the cars generated 671 horsepower and 649 pound-feet of torque, delivering power to all four wheels. Fourteen cars were planned for the championship, with announcements made for road-going versions as well.
There is currently no information from Special One Racing about the extent of damage to the cars and team equipment, but the situation does not look promising. The team’s drivers, nine-time WRC champion Sebastian Loeb and seasoned racer Guerlain Chicherit, currently hold the 8th and 9th positions respectively in the 2023 standings. This weekend’s event is the fifth in a nine-race season that concludes in Hong Kong on November 12th.
