Prosecutors allege that he asked a staffer to delete camera footage at his Florida estate in order to obstruct a federal investigation into the records. The new indictment includes charges of obstruction and willful retention of national defense information. These charges provide more detail to a previous criminal case against Trump and a close aide. The charges come as a surprise and highlight the extent of legal exposure faced by Trump as he considers a 2024 presidential run and deals with criminal cases in multiple cities. A Trump spokesperson dismissed the charges as a “desperate and flailing attempt” by the Biden administration to harass him and influence the 2024 election. Prosecutors accuse Trump of conspiring with his valet and a property manager to conceal the footage from investigators after they issued a subpoena for it.
