At the toss, Hardik said that MI had made three changes for the game against RR and explained their decision to bat first. “We are going to bat first, looks like a good wicket, we didn’t see dew in the last couple of days hence the decision to bat first. We got three changes – Nuwan, Wadhera and Piyush Chawla come in. Shepherd, Madhwal, and Shreyas Gopal go out,” said Hardik.

Hardik, who had led Gujarat Titans (GT) to their maiden IPL title in their debut season in 2022, returned to MI via a trade deal ahead of the 2024 season. He was then named the captain of MI, taking over from Rohit Sharma.

However, Hardik initially received a hostile reception from crowd at the ground during the first three matches as MI were off to a winless start to the season. MI ended their three-match winless run against Delhi Capitals (DC) on 7 April with a 29-run victory, and have since gone onto win two more games.

MI are currently in seventh place with six points from seven games. At the time of writing this report, MI were 82/4 after 11 overs with Nehal Wadhera and Tilak Varma in the middle.
