Waitress stunned after disgruntled customer leaves message on receipt over ‘rude’ act

A waitress has detailed the moment a disgruntled customer refused to give her a tip over her “rude” act.

The restaurant worker, from the US, was stunned to find an angry handwritten message left on a signed receipt after she waited a table for a couple.

The husband explained on the receipt that he wasn’t giving her any gratuity after he took particular issue with her for asking him and his wife whether they wanted to split the $A102 bill.

“No tip because it was very rude to ask my wife and I if we wanted separate checks???” the message read.

The employee shared the receipt, along with the message, in a Reddit thread called “Mildly Infuriating”.

“He had the audacity to write this with my pen,” she said.

She said she never assumed the marital status of the couple because the man appeared in his late 50s to early 60s while his “wife” was “much younger”.

However, the waitress said she’s required to ask every customer whether they wanted a split bill due to her work’s policy.

“At my job we are supposed to ask if it’s separate checks, not assume they are together,” she said.

“We had a couple and some kids come in to eat once. The server brought out one check and the woman started freaking out because the server assumed that her and the man were still together.

“She was going on and on about how just because they look like a family doesn’t mean that they’re one check. That is why we ask because we want to prevent that situation from happening again.”

More than 1,400 people responded to her post – with many weighing in on the man’s behaviour.

“Haha, no we’re married, one check is fine.” Is that really so hard? Talk about having an ego,” one said.

Another suggested: “Snowflakes getting offended when you say normal things.”

‘It’s laughable’

One shared: “This is the kind of thing that’s so ridiculous, it’s laughable. I can’t believe there are even people like that who exist in the same realm as us. If they didn’t want to tip, they could’ve just paid the bill and left like every other sane person… but no, gotta make sure they come up with some sorry excuse, mixed in with an insult, just so that they can sleep soundly at night.”

Another added: “Very infuriating. That’s not rude to ask at all. If they wanted separate checks and you didn’t ask, they would of been mad about that also.”

While one thought: “That was the dumbest excuse for not leaving a tip.”

While one shared: “I think it’s rude to assume any group of two people is a couple and wants one check. The only check this guy needs is a reality check.”

‘I’d be offended too’

On the other hand, some defended the man’s behaviour, with one saying: “Why would you ask that question? I wouldn’t tip either.”

Another shared: “I think that’s crazy to ask if they wanted to split the bill. I’m probably too old but I think that’s rude and I would definitely be offended also. Your boss is crazy to make y’all ask every table that.”
