Web-based Threads version available soon, Zuckerberg says

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced Tuesday that a web-based version of the text-based platform Threads will be launching soon as it attempts to establish itself as a direct rival to Elon Musk’s X, formerly known as Twitter.

In a Threads post Tuesday morning, Zuckerberg said that a web-based version of the app will be available over the next few days. This will allow users to access the platform online, much like how users are able to scroll through posts on X on web browsers.

Meta spokesperson Christine Pai told The Associated Press the company is working to “bring this experience to parity with mobile and will be adding more functionality to the web experience in the coming weeks.”

Threads launched in early July as frustrated users on Twitter, now known as X, grappled with Musk’s ongoing changes to the platform. In just one day, 30 million users signed up for Threads after its launch. However, many of those users have since left.

Threads allows users to log in via their existing Instagram account and customize their profile specifically for the new platform. It also allows users to follow all the profiles they already follow on Instagram.

The social media platform has a 500 character limit for posts, which is more than the 280 limit on X. Users can also post links, photos and up to five-minute long videos, as well as share their Threads posts on Instagram stories or other platforms.
