The new COVID variant, Eris, is rapidly spreading in the UK, leading to an increase in cases. Certain individuals are at a higher risk of contracting the virus. Eris, also known as EG.5.1, is the latest variant causing a surge in cases in the United Kingdom. It was first identified on July 31 and has become the second most prevalent variant in the country. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) reports that 1 in 10 cases are attributed to Eris. This rise in Eris cases coincides with a spike in hospital admissions and unfavorable weather conditions, further complicating the situation in the country. The World Health Organization (WHO) has raised concerns about the potential for a new wave due to these new variants of COVID-19.
Elderly individuals over the age of 65, pregnant women, and those with underlying health conditions are more susceptible to contracting the Eris variant. Decreased immunity is a significant factor contributing to the rapid spread of the virus. Further research is currently being conducted to understand the unique characteristics of this variant. Experts believe that waning immunity and adverse weather conditions play a role in the increased transmission rate. The symptoms of Eris are similar to other variants. Although Eris is classified as a variant under monitoring by the WHO, it does not currently hold the status of a variant of concern.
Preventive measures against Eris include getting vaccinated and receiving booster doses, wearing masks in public places, practicing social distancing, frequent handwashing, avoiding close contact with sick individuals, and ensuring proper ventilation in enclosed spaces.
