Autism is a neurological disorder that is often not talked about so much resulting in less awareness about the same. Knowledge is important to be more empathetic and sensitive. According to the definition of World Health Organisation, (WHO), Autism – also referred to as autism spectrum disorder ̶ constitutes a diverse group of conditions related to the development of the brain. The abilities and needs of autistic people vary and can evolve over time. While some people with autism can live independently, others have severe disabilities and require life-long care and support.”  In 2007, the United Nations declared April 2 as World Autism Awareness Day. As the name suggests, the day aims to raise awareness about it and “affirm and promote the full realization of all human rights and fundamental freedoms for autistic people on an equal basis with others”.

This year the theme for World Autism Awareness Day is ‘Empowering Autistic Voices’ which aims at providing more support and power to individuals with this condition, in order to ensure they lead a meaningful life and even pursue successful careers.

  3. Balanced Diet: This is an essential part of lifestyle. It is important to chart out a proper diet plan to ensure the right balance of nutrients, vitamins and minerals. It is better to consult your doctor for personalised and apt meal plan.
  4. Build Positive Aura: It is important to facilitate and create a positive social environment. Encourage by complimenting them on achieving small milestones. It serves as motivation and may help them to indulge in more such activities making them a bit more independent.
  5. Regular Exercising: Exercising can help channel their hyperactivity energy in a better manner. Staying active, in general, also helps with better cognition and leads towards a healthy lifestyle. This also can boost strength, endurance, body balance and better coordination.

Every autistic child may have different behaviour and require different type of modality catering to their needs. Therapies, modifications and lifestyle habits can help them manage their lives. There are several examples where autistic children eventually lead a healthy and independent lifestyle. Therefore, it is important to have more awareness and knowledge about it.
