On Monday afternoon, police divers found Branagan’s body in the water off Barangaroo.

It is understood Branagan had travelled to Australia from Northern Ireland in November 2023 and was due to return home within weeks.

Friends are now paying tribute to the young man who is being remembered as a “gentleman”.

“He was incredibly hard-working and had a drive to be successful, which he achieved in every aspect of his life,” St Mark’s High School Warrenpoint said on social media.

The school added Branagan had a love of travelling that was “only just beginning”.

“Lorcán was quite simply a gentleman who will be sorely missed,” it said.

Lorcán was also a senior player with Gaelic football club Clonduff GAC, which announced his “tragic passing” in a social media post.

“Our club and community are absolutely devastated at the loss of a wonderful, young gentleman who represented our club with great distinction,” it said.

“Our deepest sympathy and prayers are with Lorcán’s family.”

It is understood the death is the second tragedy to hit the Branagan family, after Lorcán’s older brother Peárce died in 2018.

“My thoughts are with the Branagan clan, Lorcán’s friends and the whole Clonduff community at this heartbreaking time,” local South Down MP Chris Hazzard said.

“May they find comfort knowing he is now reunited with big brother Peárce.”

Bungalow8 confirmed Lorcán had visited the venue shortly before he disappeared.

“Our thoughts are with the individual’s family and loved ones during this time,” a spokesperson said.

Investigations are ongoing.
