Rebel Moon filmmaker Zack Snyder wants to scale things down before working on his sci-fi series’ next slate of potential sequels.

The second part of the hit Netflix movie, The Scargiver, will be streaming this Friday and continue Kora (played by Sofia Boutella) and Gunnar’s (Michiel Huisman) battle against Admiral Noble (Ed Skrein) and The Imperium.

Although this action-packed sequel wraps up the story that began in Part One: A Child of Fire, some loose threads will hopefully be picked up in the “trilogy of sequels” he teased in SFX Magazine.

However, fans may have to wait a little longer for the adventure to continue this time around, as Zack teased he has ideas for a smaller film which he hopes to get started on first.

“We definitely are gonna take a small breather, I think,” he told Express.co.uk. “And go do, maybe a little movie.

“We don’t know exactly, but something else. Something that’s maybe not all visual effects back to back. Just to keep ourselves sane, you know?”

After working with Warner Bros on the DC Extended Universe, Zack’s follow-up projects also included the sprawling zombie blockbuster Army of the Dead, which has spawned a franchise of its own.

It’s no surprise the 300 director is taking a break before starting work on another trilogy, though he’s keeping his lips sealed about what his next project could entail for now.

As for Rebel Moon, viewers could expect more warriors to join the fold after the events of Part Two.

“I think there’ll be a couple new faces,” Zack said. “But, really, taking these guys all the way would be the interesting next step.”

No spoilers here, but some surprising revelations and a dramatic cliffhanger ending has already set the stage for Part Three.

Fans are also looking forward to R-rated extended versions of both parts of Rebel Moon, and are hoping the trend continues for the sequels.

In our chat, Zack also touched on expanding the relationship between Kora and Gunnar after their fledgling romance in the original instalment.

“They were cast separately, [but] I knew Sofia’s an incredible chameleon,” he said.

“She’s really warm and I thought if she brought some of that to Kora, the idea that she was trying to find a real relationship was going to be the new news for her.

“And Michiel is just really kind and open, so that combo, the two of them, I thought would be amazing. And they were great together.”

Rebel Moon Part Two: The Scargiver releases Friday, April 19 on Netflix.
