With 40 Lok Sabha constituencies, fourth highest among all states and union territories, Bihar holds crucial position in shaping Indian politics.
As per EC’s announcement, the general elections in Bihar will be held in all the seven phases starting April 19, 2024. The counting of votes would be held on June 4.
In phase 1, which will be held on April 19, Aurangabad, Gaya, Nawada and Jamui will go to polls.
Voting in Kishanganj, Katihar, Purnia, Bhagalpur and Banka would be conducted in the 2nd phase on April 26.
In the 3rd phase, scheduled to be held on May 7, Jhanjharpur, Supaul, Araria, Madhepura and Khagaria would go to polls.
Darbhanga, Ujiarpur, Samastipur, Begusarai and Munger would go to polls in phase 4 on May 13.
Phase 6, scheduled for May 25, would witness voting in Valmiki Nagar, Paschim Champaran, Purvi Champaran, Sheohar, Vaishali, Gopalganj, Siwan and Maharajganj.
In the last phase on June 1, Nalanda, Patna Sahib, Pataliputra, Arrah, Buxar, Sasaram, Karakat and Jahanabad would go to polls.
The NDA alliance which comprises of Bihar CM Nitish Kumar’s JD(U), BJP, Ram Vilas Paswan’s LJP and Jitan Ram Manjhi’s HAM released its candidate list.
The saffron party will contest from 17 seats while CM Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) will fight from 16 seats. Ram Vilas Paswan’s LJP will contest from 5 seats, while HAM and RLP will contesting one seat each.
The Mahagathbandhan announced the seat-sharing agreement, with the RJD, the coalition’s largest member, slated to nominate candidates for 26 seats. The Congress will nominate its candidates for 9 seats, while CPI(ML) will contest three and CPI and CPM will each contest one seat.
The state made headlines in January when chief minister Nitish Kumar decided to break away from Mahagathbandhan and joined hands with the BJP forming NDA government. In 2019 Lok Sabha elections, NDA that comprised of BJP, JDU and LJP won 39 out of 40 seats.
The RJD, INC and RLSP’s Mahagathbandhan could only manage one with INC’s Mohammed Jawed emerging victorious from Kishanganj. Further, previous election had 34 unreserved seats and 6 reserved seats for Scheduled Caste candidates.
