Karnataka Extends 100 Acres of Land to Foxconn for Establishing iPhone Manufacturing Facility

BENGALURU: The Karnataka government on Monday offered Foxconn, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of iPhones, an additional 100 acres of land to set up an Rs 8,800 crore (over $1 billion) plant to manufacture smartphone parts.
The Taiwanese company had previously committed to establishing an electronics manufacturing facility for which it had been granted 300 acres in the IT investment region near the Bengaluru international airport in Devanahalli. This facility, which is expected to involve an investment of Rs 13,700 crore ($1.7 billion), will primarily assemble iPhones. The proposed additional facility is expected to manufacture screens and body/back panels of mobile phones that will be used by the assembly unit.
A delegation headed by the Foxconn Industrial Internet CEO Brand Cheng met chief minister Siddaramaiah at the Vidhana Soudha on Monday to discuss the matter. The meeting was also attended by large and medium industries minister M B Patil, IT/BT minister Priyank Kharge and other senior bureaucrats.
Siddaramaiah assured Cheng that 100 acres of land would be provided near the Japanese Industrial Area in Tumakuru. “Our state government will extend complete cooperation,” he said. Patil said the project will create 14,000 jobs. At the meeting, Siddaramaiah said the government will take the initiative to provide the company with the required human resources. He and Patil also encouraged Foxconn to look at Karnataka for projects beyond smartphones.
