Evercade has announced a selection of new products, including another new handheld device, not to mention a traditional TV-based console. Retro gaming fans will be able to pick up the Evercade EXP-R handheld and Evercade VS-R home console from July 2024, with pre-orders going live on April 30. The Evercade EXP-R handheld is described as “the best way to play Evercade cartridges on the go”, featuring a charcoal grey and turquoise design with a textured grip on the rear of the console. It will retail for £99.99, making it cheaper than the previously released Evercade EXP handheld, although it does lack some of the functionality. Unlike the older model, the EXP-R doesn’t feature TV or HDMI output, and it won’t launch with any built-in games. Designed purely for portable play, it will, however, come bundled with one of the company’s new GIGA Cartridges, which are designed to hold larger retro game originally released on CD format (but more on that later).
The Evercade VS-R, meanwhile, is designed to be played on your television set or monitor, featuring a HDMI port for 1080p gaming.
It boasts a similar colour scheme to its handheld counterpart, with a charcoal grey base and turquoise accents.
The Evercade VS-R comes with a dual cartridge slot, giving users the ability to choose from more games at once. Sadly, however, Namco Museum Collection 1 and 2 won’t be supported.
While it only comes with one controller, the VS-R has four ports for local multiplayer, and will be bundled with one of the aforementioned GIGA Carts.
One of the more exciting firmware upgrades is the ability to select TATE mode for vertical screen rotation. Ideal for vertical shoot-em-ups, users will be able to rotate their monitor in order to experience certain arcade classics the way they were meant to be played.
Even better is the price tag, which at £89.99 is a much more affordable way to get the Evercade home console experience.
In addition to two new consoles, Evercade has also announced plans to release the TATE Grip for the EXP and EXP-R handheld devices.
The new accessory will secure your Evercade handheld device when you flip it on its side in order to play vertical shooters on the go. It’s available for £17.99.
Finally, Evercade has announced its first GIGA Cart gaming collection, which will be bundled with the new hardware when it launches at the end of July.
The Evercade Tomb Raider Collection contains the first three games in the original 32-bit trilogy starring Lara Croft.
