Radio star’s son unintentionally severs toe with meat cleaver

KIIS FM radio co-host Jase Hawkins has recalled the terrifying moment his young son accidentally chopped off part of his toe with a meat cleaver.

The Melbourne radio star had the shock of his life when he later found part of 16-month old Archie’s missing toe on the kitchen floor.

The grisly accident unfolded as Hawkins had his back turned for a second to make his coffee, he explained on radio on Wednesday.

“I’m in the kitchen making a coffee and I look down to my right and he is in the walk-in pantry area, just playing with everything,” Hawkins explained, noting Archie had just started walking and was in the “getting into everything” phase.

“He starts pulling stuff out of this cupboard we haven’t been in for five years and that’s when he pulls out (a meat cleaver).”

In the video of Hawkins’ chat about the incident with Lauren Phillips and Clint Stanaway, he then pulls out the meat cleaver in question to show his radio co-hosts.

“Why do you even own that, are you chopping up whole lambs?” Phillips asked.

“Do you have an abattoir out the back?” Stanaway added.

“Stop waving that thing around!” Phillips said.

“We had no idea it was in there,” Hawkins continued.

The dad-of-three rushed Archie to Sandringham Hospital with the rest of the family, all in their pyjamas.

“So they patched it all up,” he said.

“That quiet day turned into four doctors, two different hospitals and a trip to the plastic surgeon.”

He said the top part of Archie’s toe was “growing back”.

“He took the top of the toe off, down to the nail,” Hawkins explained.

“He was fine, he cried a little bit … it could have been so much worse.”
