Rani Mukerji is one of the actresses who is not just known for her charismatic appearance but for her roles. The characters that she has presented on the big screens have left everlasting impressions on the hearts of cinema lovers. One of her most iconic roles was in the movie ‘Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna’ as Maya.
Talking about the same at IFFI, Rani described the beauty of her character and how it opened dialogue for taboo topics. She said, “With ‘Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna’, it was important to talk about what a woman wants and a woman’s choice. Just because a husband doesn’t beat you, doesn’t mean he is really good in bed or is in love with you. I think people give less importance when it comes to a woman in love. What is more important in a marriage and especially to the families is that a man is settled, he comes from a good family, but the physical aspect or the physical chemistry is not taken too much into account. A man can choose that but a woman is never allowed or asked a question – are you attracted to this man, would you like to marry him.”

“And in the case of Maya’s character, what was beautiful was she loved Rishi’s character (played by Abhishek Bachchan). She loved him in a different capacity; as a friend. But what she found in Shah Rukh’s character Dev was the romance that she was always looking for. I think that was wonderful,” she added.
The actress further spoke about how bold it was for director Karan Johar to make a movie that was ahead of its time. “With Karan, he was bold to make a film like that at the time when he wasn’t sure what was happening. I think it is important to stand by strong roles and strong films, sometimes you might not get the kind of audience that it has.”

“But I think in the history of Indian cinema it will always be remembered as a film ahead of its time. And I think what happened with ‘Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna’ is, after the film there were a lot of divorces. A lot of people were going to the theatre and watching the film in extreme discomfort. Because nobody wants to face the reality of their lives. And I think that is the feedback that Karan got after the film,” concluded Rani Mukerji.
