In 2019, there was a short-lived rumour that Hunter Schafer and Rosalía had a romantic dalliance. The hope outweighed the evidence: most of which revolved around Rosalía thanking Schafer during an acceptance speech at the 2020 Billboard Women In Music Awards. There were also a couple of images and videos of the duo that seemed to capture the natural intimacy of two people whose skin might have touched. But were these not the documents of the ultimate female friendship?
It turns out the rumors were true. In a new interview published in GQ, Schafer confirmed that she and Rosalía had dated for about five months in the fall of 2019. “There’s been so much speculation for so long,” she said. “Part of us just wants to get it over with, and then another part is like, ‘It’s none of anybody’s fucking business! It’s something I’m happy to share. And I think she feels that way too.” As someone who has written this, this and this about the clothes well-known couples get photographed in, Hunter’s admission was bittersweet: I am pleased that this thing happened, but I am also disappointed that two of the most successful dressers in romantic history will be overshadowed with all the discourse that collects around the Biebers’s mismatched wardrobes.
