Drunk driving: A big concern on Indian roads
Drunk driving remains a significant contributor to road fatalities in India, as highlighted by the road accident data for 2022 released by the Centre. According to the data, drunk driving accounted for a substantial portion of road accidents nationwide in 2022, causing 3,268 accidents, which equates to nearly one-tenth of all accidents recorded that year.
Additionally, 1,503 fatalities were attributed to drunk driving, comprising approximately 11% of the total road accident deaths in India for that year.
Drunk driving: What law says
The Motor Vehicle Act explicitly outlines traffic regulations pertaining to drunk driving. Traffic police officials can make drivers undergo a Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) test to assess their level of intoxication.
Typically, breath analysers are utilized by traffic police to determine alcohol levels, with the rule stipulating that a driver is considered safe if their alcohol level measures less than 30 mg per 100 ml of blood.
